Eczema is a type of dermatitis, which is and inflammation of the epidermis (skin) commonly affecting the face, arms, hands and legs. The term eczema is broadly applied to a range of persistent skin conditions. These include dryness and recurring skin rashes that are characterized by one or more of these symptoms: redness, skin edema (swelling), itching and dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing, or bleeding. Eczema is non-contagious and for most sufferers, nearly impossible not to itch.

There is a lot of confusion over what eczema is not only in outsiders, but even within the medical community and eczema sufferers. I don’t believe many doctors give their patients sufficient amounts of information on their conditions which often leads to frustration, confusion and stress, which will often only make the condition worse. This also leads many doctors to quickly prescribe drugs to solve the problem rather than educating patients on how to improve their environments.

Types of Eczema

Atopic Eczema

Atopic eczema is easily caused by irritants, food, and environmental allergens which cause the skin to abnormally react. It is commonly found on the inner side of the elbows and knees although can be found anywhere on the body. It is also most common in babies and children although can persist through adulthood and is likely to change pattern with age.
